What do cake mixes, footballs, marshmallows, and pet food have in common? They are all made from beef byproducts. When we harvest a beef animal, we use around 99% of the carcass, 64% of it specifically for meat. So what do we do with the remaining 35%? The answer to this questions is all around you, enriching your life each day. Beef byproducts are essential to us, and it's something that meat eaters, vegetarians, and veagans can not ignore. There are three types of products that beef cattle are used for besides meat: inedible products, edible products, and pharmaceutical products. It is truly remarkable what these animals can be used for besides a great source of protein. Therefore, I think it's important to educate our youth about the wonders of a beef animal. I was able to speak wiith one of our local 4-H groups today and it was a fun idea for their meeting! Most of my "students" were in grade school or even younger, so I kept it short and fun. I passed out coloring pages with a cow on them to all the kids. I held up different byproducts and asked them to color where they thought they came from. Most of the children did not know most of the products came from cattle, so it was fun to share with them, even if many of them proclaimed "that is disgusting!" I feel truly blessed to be able to share about how impressive beef is, and I hope to do so more in the future! Below is a fun diagram with byproducts thanks to the Farm Credit Knowledge Center and pictures from my 4-H visit!
