Up before dawn
She makes their coffee strong Off into the darkness they go Calling horses in as the sun starts to show She saddles the big buckskin Her fingers numb as she tightens the cinch Off into the sagebrush they ride Their cowponies side by side She smiles as her cowboy trots ahead He’s eying the landscape for cows black or red Up on the ridge he sees them She follows swiftly to keep up with him The cows begin to trail on They know the way home He spots a lame calf She knows to get her rope out A head and a heel, they lay him down How quickly they get him up and around It may have involved some choice words But all of that is forgotten afterwards A match made the Cowboy way That isn’t a way to make a living they say How wrong they are she knows For no better life one can own
