Along the Silver Springs in Montana sits a little ranch house. It was once three tiny bunkhouses for the cowboys, but the walls have been torn down and a few extra doors and windows remain. Made by hand, the little brick house still stands as strong as it did the day the bricks were laid. You might miss it if it weren’t for the smoke coming out of the chimney on cold nights. The little ranch house may not look like much, but it has become our home. Although it hasn’t always been that way... When we first moved in I felt lost. I had no closet, no place to wash clothes, and the thought of touching anything made me cringe. So I scrubbed, washed, and drove myself crazy for days, constantly cleaning and organizing. Also, if I’m being honest I probably bought the local store out of scented candles. After a few weeks, I realized that the little ranch house may not be so bad after all. I no longer wished for a closet, my wooden coat rack worked just fine. To do our laundry I run up to our neighbor’s, where I not only get clean clothes, but great conversations too. I still wear slippers in the house to combat the ruthless dust bunnies, but my feet are always toasty warm. I love waking up each morning to the horses grazing and the magpies perched on the fence outside our kitchen window. I wave to my best friend as he smiles walking out the door to work. When I get home, I can’t help but laugh as I make culinary masterpieces standing on bright green carpet. And our ratchet strapped twin beds only separate every now and then. I am certain that the square footage, amount of funny colored carpet, or value of your house don’t factor into what makes a house a home. What truly matters is that your house feels like home.
Every night as I pull into the yard, I can’t help but be excited. There are always three happy dogs and a cowboy who are waiting for me in our little ranch house that is now home.
